Meniscus surgery: Dos and Don’ts post meniscus surgery

Meniscus surgery: Dos and Don’ts post meniscus surgery

Meniscus surgery is a common procedure that involves the removal or repairs dos the damaged cartilage in the knee. There are two types of meniscus surgery: meniscus repair and meniscectomy. Meniscus repair is performed when the tear is in the outer third of the meniscus, where there is a  good blood supply. The torn edges of the meniscus are sutured back together, allowing the meniscus to heal naturally. Meniscectomy is performed when the tear is in the inner two-thirds of the meniscus, where there is a poor blood supply. The torn portion of the meniscus is removed surgically. After surgery, it is important to follow certain dos and don’ts to ensure proper healing and minimize the risk of complications.

Here are some general guidelines that you can follow:

Dos:

  • Follow your surgeon’s instructions carefully:

Your surgeon will provide you with specific instructions on how to care for your knee after surgery. Make sure to follow them closely to promote proper healing.

  • Rest and elevate your knee:

Take it easy for a few days after surgery and avoid putting weight on your knee. Elevate your knee above your heart whenever possible to reduce swelling and improve circulation.

  • Use ice to reduce swelling:

Apply ice to your knee for 15-20 minutes at a time, several times a day, to reduce swelling and pain.

  • Wear a knee brace:

Your surgeon may prescribe a knee brace to help support your knee and protect it from further damage.

  • Attend physical therapy:

Your surgeon may recommend physical therapy to help restore your knee’s range of motion and strength. Attend all scheduled appointments and follow your therapist’s instructions.

Don’ts

  • Put weight on your knee:

Avoid putting weight on your knee for at least a few days after surgery. Use crutches or a walker as directed by your surgeon.

  • Participate in strenuous activities:

Avoid activities that could put stress on your knee, such as running, jumping, or other high-impact exercises, for several weeks after surgery.

  • Neglect your pain management:

Don’t neglect the pain post-surgery. Take pain medication as prescribed by your surgeon to help manage discomfort and promote restful sleep.

  • Skip physical therapy:

Physical therapy is an important part of your recovery process. Skipping appointments or failing to follow your therapist’s instructions could delay your healing and increase the risk of complications.

  • Resume normal activities too quickly:

Give your knee time to heal before resuming normal activities. Follow your surgeon’s recommendations for when you can return to work or resume physical activities.

Recovery from meniscus surgery depends on the extent of the procedure and the individual’s healing process. In general, patients are advised to avoid weight-bearing activities for a few weeks after surgery and may need to use crutches or wear a brace for support. Physical therapy may also be recommended to help regain strength and range of motion in the knee. The success rat of meniscus surgery varies depending on the type of tear, the patient’s age and overall health, and other factors.
